The Bortigali Municipal Library was established in 1981 and is currently housed in an elegant early 20th century building, originally used as an elementary school and recently renovated in order to house library activities.
The Bortigali Library performs public reading service for all citizens who request it. In 2002 it was among the first local government libraries in Sardinia to join the National Library System, and because of this it has a catalog viewable in theOPAC of the Region of Sardinia http://opac.regione.sardegna.it/SebinaOpac/Opac and in the National http://www.sbn.it/opacsbn/opac/iccu/free.jsp.
In providing service, the library aims to be a place for meeting and socializing, taking care of the relationship with users and activating a policy of friendly reception, which has enabled it to build a lasting relationship with most of them.
Currently, its documentary holdings are around the 23,100 units with a book-to-capita ratio of about 16.5 volumes. In terms of organizational and collection sorting criteria, the library is structured on an open-shelf basis in order to ensure that everyone has free access in choosing the material offered, which is appropriately marked in each section and shelf.
The collection is divided into 6 sections: the general section devoted to fiction, art, sociology and music; the Sardinia section with volumes of various genres related to the themes of the island; the children’s section housed in a large, colorful, child-friendly room; the Don Puddu Fund with a collection stemming from a donation made by Don Costanzo Puddu in 2007; the Emeroteca with newspapers and magazines; and the Mediatheque with a large collection of films, documentaries and music CDs.
The Bortigali library is currently undergoing a major redevelopment and innovation intervention funded by the Ministry of Culture under the PNRR funding Mission 1 Digitization, Innovation, Competitiveness and Culture Measure 1 “Cultural Heritage for the Next Generation” Component 3 Culture 4.0 (M1C3-3) Investment 1.2 – “Removing physical and cognitive barriers in museums, libraries and archives to enable wider access and participation in culture” funded by the European Union NextGenerationEU.
This intervention is aimed at innovating and enhancing the services of the municipal library of Bortigali in terms of physical, sensory and cognitive accessibility. Specifically, the intervention plans to: remove physical, sensory and perceptual limitations that may be a source of discomfort and limitation for potential users; innovate the range of services through the adoption of technological and digital solutions; and strengthen the social role of the library and activate actions to involve citizens and children in library activities.
